Born in 1956, Dr. Jemison has never known to
back down from any of life's obstacles. She has fully utilized education
to achieve some of her goals.
Her dedication to humanity is demonstrated by her Peace Corps assignment.
She has held many titles in her life. She is a chemical engineer, scientist,
physician, teacher and astronaut. Her passions are as extensive as her goals.
She speaks Japanese, Russian, Swahili and English. She is very knowledgeable
about African and African-American studies. She has also trained in modern
dance and choreography.
She competed along with over 2000 applicants for a position with NASA and
was selected. She is the first African-American woman to go into space.
She was the scientist on the Endeavor in 1992 a joint Japanese/US mission.
She resigned from NASA in 1993 and continues to pursue her interest in medicine
and introducing the marriage of the "hard" and "soft" sciences. She has
received numerous honorary degrees and is highly sought after as a guest
speaker.

Dr. Jemison believes that no woman should let limitations restrict her
education and existence. She believes in reaching for the stars and continues
to reach for them. Dr. Jemison is an inspiration to women of all races, national
origins and faiths.
